Troubleshooting

Common issues

  • Can’t download an image from Google Docs
    • File -> publish to the web -> link
    • Copy-paste the link into your browser; it will lead you to an HTML page
    • Right-click on the image to download it

  • Image is showing up blurry or pixelated
    • Make sure it’s embedded
      • Windows -> links -> right click on image -> embed link
    • Change the quality display
      • Right-click on image -> graphics -> high quality display

  • Image isn’t the right size
    • Press “command” and “shift” at the same time. You can now change the image size without distorting it.

  • You want to add a feather
    • Click on “rectangle tool” and create a box > click on color swatches to choose the color you want the feather to be > right click on the box > effects > basic feather
    • Make sure the “preview” box in the bottom left is checked
    • Adjust “feather width” as you see fit (I suggest keeping corners “Diffused” and noise and choke at 0 but it depends on what looks best with the individual layout. If you do change corners, make sure to keep the same corners for all the feathers in the magazine)

  • You want to crop the image
    • Select the edge of an image and move it back-and-forth to crop. Sometimes the images have two frames, one purple and one green. Make sure you move the green frame.

  • The image is upside-down or flipped
    • Right click on image -> arange -> rotate

  • You want to make the page a different background color
    • Draw a rectangle with the rectangle tool
    • Right click on rectangle -> color -> swatches
    • Right click -> arrange -> send backward

  • There are colored lines you want to get rid of
    • Toolbar -> view -> grids and guides

  • You want to insert a diamond at the end of a short story (Note: we’re not doing this for recent issues)
    • Type -> Glyphs -> Show symbols -> Scroll -> Click on the diamond
    • May be easier to copy-paste from another short story once you’ve done it once

  • You want to change the space in between lines (for a poem: adding a space between paragraphs)
    • Highlight all the text you want to change -> Go to the middle-right of the text formatting toolbar (where there are icons with numbers next to it)
    • Hover on the fourth “align” option (it should say “Space after) -> Change or increase the value in the box

  • You want to change the space in between lines (for a short story: not adding a space between paragraphs)
    • Highlight all the text you want to change the spacing for -> go to “type” on the top toolbar -> click on Paragraph
    • Click on the gray arrow with the lines next to it on the top right corner -> Click on Justification -> Change auto-leading percentage (a higher percentage means more space between lines)

  • You want to move an element to the front or send it to the back.
    • Right click -> Arrange -> Bring to front or bring to back
